1. Do not trust the government. They are not interested in the success of small businesses. However, walk on the edge of the system but not on the outside. The system does not like non-conformists.
2. Pay your taxes on time. Put a little aside each week or even pay in advance. Beware the teeth of the tax department.
3. Use the services of a book keeper and accountant. They should keep you safe from the jaws of the hungry system.
4. Do not try to beat the system, it is bigger and tougher than you. It is also without compassion and interested only in the law and not in justice.
5. Do not give your product or services away to friends or acquaintances. You will feel resentful that they are not appreciative of your effort.
7. Give service in ways that cost very little money. A smile, politeness, attentiveness and a little humour are wonderful additions to any product or service. Unless you can afford it, do not give your product away, instead give extra service.
6. Work out how much you need to earn a week and add 30%. If you cannot do it, get out now. Business is full of unexpected costs and a lot of them must be paid immediately.
8. Make sure everything points the customer to a sale. Forget the clever add-ons and fancy business cards, focus on the task at hand - making the customer happy and making a profit. Do the details later when you can afford them.
9. If you can’t pay a bill on time, talk to the people concerned so that they know they will eventually get their money. Fulfil your promises as a priority.
10. Treasure those businesses that are essential for your success. Keep changing suppliers until you are comfortable with your relationship. You cannot work with people whom you do not trust.
11. Your customers are your only access to success, work to give them value, satisfaction and a pleasurable experience.
Self-employment is not for the faint-hearted. There is no guarantee of support from customers, colleagues and certainly not from your local friendly government or bank.
It is all up to you to make it work.
